Anchored by a weathered cedar clad bedroom wing, a bold concrete cantilever projects the living and dining areas into the dense forest and towards the view, while an ipe deck emerges from the kitchen into an open meadow to the south. A flat roof that hovers high above the living spaces helps to create the illusion that you are sitting outdoors amongst the forest. Going one step further, a large opening in the master bath opens the space up completely to the Puget Sound. In addition to its simple yet rugged design, the house features benefits from natural daylighting and passive ventilation that provide all the light and air a family could need. Measuring in at 2800-square-feet, the retreat’s floor is anything but modest, even though its difficult to deny the beauty of the finished product. So far, the house has won the AIA Honor Awards for Washington 2012 Merit Award, and the AIA Design Awards Pacific Region 2012 Citation Award.
