The Tree Church of New Zealand is “framed” by the planting and weaving of Cut Leaf Alder and other trees. The trees are spaced near each other, and as they grow, their trunks and branches are woven to create a living structure. As the structure grew toward its peak, the artist used various other species like Copper Sheen to create wall and canopy coverings. The result shows the iconic shape of a traditional church, with walls and a ceiling that provides shade and privacy from the world around it. Originally, Barry Cox intended to build his Tree Church for personal enjoyment. After seeing it in its finished form, he felt it was too special to keep to himself. It will be open to the public in October 2015, available to be reserved for weddings and other ceremonies. On the same property of the Tree Church of New Zealand, Mr. Cox has built carefully landscaped gardens, walking paths and other amenities to enrich the visitor experience.
