The Swiss mechanical watch wizards at Marvin have released a new series of timepieces, the Marvin M112 Mechanical Collection. The Marvin M112 watches offer a refreshingly simple design sensibility that is in contrast with most of the other modern watches on the market. The faceplate is minimal, no extraneous bells and whistles– just three arms, sixty seconds and twelve hours as marked. The Marvin M112 watches are mechanical, powered by a manual winding knob on the watch’s right side....

But sadly, the scarf, a basic length of fabric, somehow confounds and eludes the common man who lets his neck go bare as he walks this freezing planet, letting all the blood that goes to his brain cool off. When compared to its predecessor, the D4, the new Nikon D4s offers a few well-defined and very intentional upgrades. It features a new 16.2MP sensor, designed as an upgrade to the unit in the D4 and the Nikon Df, and light sensitivity settings of up to ISO 409,600. To the uninitiated, that 16.2MP number might seem underwhelming, especially since Nikon’s entry level DSLR offers 24.2MP in its sensor. Megapixel counts are not a measure of image quality, just the total number of pixels that comprise an image....

Our obsession with night photography and cities at night continues, this time with a focus on the big apple by excellent city photographer Jason Hawkes. Hawkes takes the perspective of a bird in flight over some of the world’s most magnificent cities, showing them at their most active yet peaceful moments. Hawkes was recently featured on Boston.com’s Big Picture, and we couldn’t help but share a few of our favorites here....

The land upon which Shubin and Donaldson built the Revello Residence is central to its appeal. It is on the peak of a hill, standing above a number of properties along the coast below, and it makes this plot a part of its architectural use. The main level, where living rooms and kitchens and shared spaces live, extends out to the edge of the hill. This patio and yard is landscaped and furnished as if it were part of the architecture itself, making the home feel much larger than its constructed space alone....

The Round Tower House features a restored upper tower and a cavernous living section below. The tower was approaching the need for demolition, but the architect gave it a second life with this design. Amidst rehabbing the tower, the lower section was built with multiple skylights that gave a view to the home’s tower above. The below-ground entertainment section features a sunken courtyard with a swimming pool and sun deck that is hidden from view of the neighbors....

The concept of goggle-style display devices is not new, with early technologies dating back to the break of the 1990s. As hi-def display systems became smaller, thinner and lighter, a head-worn system like this began to finally make sense. Sony’s breakthrough foray into head-mounted display technology should spark a movement where other tech developers follow suit. Will Microsoft develop something similar for Xbox 360 and Windows systems? Could Apple get involved?...
