What Makes a Tequila Exceptional According to the law, to bear the name tequila, a spirit must be made in the region outside of Guadalajara, or in segments of four various Mexican states. For it to be good, it must be 100% Blue Agave, though this is split into several categories: Tequila Silver, Blanco, Plata, White; Tequila Platinum; Tequila Gold, Joven – Oro; Tequila Reposado; Tequila Añejo – aka extra aged between one and three years – and Tequila Extra Añejo – aka extra, extra aged, which is a relatively new category that is anything aged more than 3 years....
The cuisine at Miss Kō is pan-Asian by design, with dishes spanning the Asian continent from Japan to Korea, China to Vietnam. Guests can enjoy fresh sushi of both traditional and progressive preparation, while the Chef’s Specials merge a variety of Asian influences with a distinct European sensibility. On the plate alone, guests to Miss Kō are treated to a well-traveled experience with a pair of chopsticks. The design of Miss Kō by Philippe Starck is the stand-out characteristic of this new restaurant....
Thanks to an ugly proliferation of bad design, the slogan tee went out of fashion years ago thanks to Urban Outfitters and otherwise. Monsieur Steve is a fresh face on this scene that is helping to bring the form back to the forefront. Monsieur Steve T-Shirts are a playful, decidedly stylish take on the slogan tee with phrases that only concern the fashionable. The “Karl” in the “I Love Karl” t-shirt is none other than Mr....
The systems most of us use to control our home climate are archaic at best, wasteful at worst. The new Nest learning thermostat hopes to change that by intelligently, efficiently managing the temperature of our homes. Nest monitors the temperature of a home, learns the daily habits of its users and adjusts itself to keep a house comfortable and efficient. It’s also a beautiful little gadget, the brain child of the man who created the iPod for Apple, Tony Fadell....
Industrial designer Erin Fong has presented an ergonomic and functional upgrade to the typical DSLR. Since the film roll is no longer a vital part of a SLR camera’s shape, the form can now change along with the function. Erin Fong’s Nova DSLR Concept gives the digital SLR two rotating handles that can extend to the right and left or to combine to one handle at the bottom of the unit....
The San Diego architecture firm Sebastian Mariscal Studio was tapped to design a temple to Peruvian cuisine in the Hell’s Kitchen district of New York City. Using concrete, reclaimed wood and little else, Sebastian Mariscal built the breathtaking interior of Pio Pio, a posh Peruvian dining experience on Manhattan island. The walls and ceiling of Pio Pio are comprised of tightly-woven reclaimed branches, creating a natural vibe reminiscent of early South American hut architecture....
[photography by Seamus Payne for TheCoolist.com] In the last century, watch makers started experimenting with new ways of displaying the time. From quirky digital read-outs to swirling jump-hour displays, timekeeping got visually complicated, and not always for the better. QLOCKTWO did things differently in recent years with the textual display. This watch is a stand-out conversation starter, but unlike the experimental watches of the 1960s and 80s, the QLOCKTWO display is immediately functional....
Located on a steep slope that was previously used for grazing animals, Raw Architecture Workshop opted for living spaces on the upper portion of the plot to maximize views, while placing the sleeping quarters further down. Entrance is gained to the house via a concrete bunker almost entirely devoid of light, but as you go up through the building, spaces enlarge, the materials used are significantly lighter, while daylight levels and ceiling heights soar....
Out of the half-million photos that Reuters photographers produce each here, Reuters has selected 55 as the Best Photos of 2010. These photographs capture the human spirit at play and in turmoil within the natural world around us. The Pakistani floods, the Gulf oil spill, the Shanghai World Expo, the Haitian earthquakes and more are all represented here with stunning symbolism. These photographs are a visual record of the world in 2010, where human culture made its movement into yet another decade....
To honor Sol – the fiery ball in the sky that lets us live each day, and sometimes burns us to a sweet lobster red – we thought we would share some dazzling, mind-bending solar bulb installations and works of art all about the sun. Sonic Bloom by Dan Corson Located in the gloomy Pacific Northwest, Sonic Bloom absorbs the sun’s power, acting as an ordinary, run-of-the-mill installation of giant flowers during the day, then becomes a gentle show in the evening....
The house itself is comprised of two dense levels on the ground and first floors, with an upper story designed as an open play room for the children. Architect Moon Hoon even told DesignBoom that the upper level is “a place high up that could be a control room for the future darth vader or a jedi.” Outside, wooden decking wraps around two sides of the house to create a space for relaxation, summer BBQs, and quiet contemplation in the summer months....
What Makes a Good Handheld GPS Connectivity and easy use are the cornerstones of a quality Global Positioning System, with durability and portability fleshing out the system. The ability to point out geocaches, plot a route, and give you useful survival tips are generally gravy, but since they can also save your life, they too factor in heavily to what can make a GPS system worth your hard-earned dollars. In short, anything that does a good job of keeping you alive in the most conditions is what we think of when we reach for the best in handheld GPS technology....
German architect Jakob Tigges has envisioned a bold new landmark on the Berlin skyline. His dream work is a 1,000 meter tall man-made mountain called “The Berg”, which he hopes will be a tourist destination the likes of which Berlin has never seen. The goal is to create a natural habitat for local wildlife, even some that aren’t natural to the area, as well as a recreation/skiing spot for those visiting the city....
Remember that time when tiny houses are all the rage? You’ve probably seen those cute little home photos online or watched TV series like Tiny House, Big Living by HGTV, or Netflix’s Tiny House Nation. Tiny Houses Are Still A Valid Option But wait, tiny houses are still an exciting trend, especially for those who want to embrace a lifestyle of minimalism and simplicity. Because the idea – having less space (and thus, less stuff) creates more room for more essential things in life – is a dang appealing one!...
This redesign of the UN Building’s interior is the first of its kind in over 60 years. The building was originally imagined by a star-studded list of world architects including Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier and others. The original vision of these architects has been maintained, but current stars like Koolhaas and Jongerius have given this portion a welcome visual update. The 68th General Assembly of the United Nations ended Friday in New York, and the interior now returns to regular non-assembly business for UN workers in Manhattan....
Architect Andrew Maynard of Melbourne, Australia is amongst our favorites here at TheCoolist, and his Vader House is clearly one of his best. While it made the rounds of the design blogosphere earlier last year, we felt compelled to bring it back to light. This geometric, open-air home is an extension on a Victorian terrace, resting privately around an enclosed patio just steps away from the busy city streets. The rehabbed Vader House maintains the old brick perimeter, providing an old city charm to this decidedly modern construction....
Dreams, at least the ones we can remember when we wake up, can sometimes boggle our minds. But nothing can shock, confuse, and cause a flurry of emotions (good or bad) more than a dream about an old flame, recent or otherwise. What an extreme inconvenience, right? You’ve cried over it, maybe have gotten over the drunk-texting-your-ex stage, and most likely have moved on with your life. So why is their stupid face creeping up on your peaceful sleep?...
Architectural designs have evolved immensely over the last few decades. While this is the case, the popularity of A-frame homes has remained constant. Such houses blew in popularity during the mid-centuries and were mainly used as vacation homes. Today, an A-frame house is still a popular scene in modern neighborhoods thanks to the steep-pitched roof that give a relaxed rustic vibe. Apart from the appealing aesthetics of A-houses, they are incredibly strong and resilient....
Music, in this way, is unique. It’s a medium of expression where the very message being conveyed is one of utter, fever-dream hellaciousness, yet it will forever ring in hearts and minds for the feeling it evokes, the sound, the fury, and the passion that comes from the song. Then, there’s the beauty of a strong chorus that is simple and makes the other gibberish fall away like stripper glitter in a typhoon....
